I braved the rain during my Sunday hangover to peep game at the bi-annual(?) record swap meet at the Croatian Cultural Center. We all know how much of a bitch shopping, or searching, or thinking can be when you’re feeling not-so so-so, but i threw down pretty hard on those crates, and thankfully not up afterwards.

Finding a picture of this malnourished boy reminded me of how grateful we should all be for our lives of excess and freedom while living in this developed nation. Music is a great indulgence, and i am thankful my ears have not been blown out or off at my tender age.

Moving on..

3 bones for a Fat Boys LP? And he threw in this dude for an even 5 spot!

(this isn’t the actual album i copped, i was scared the funk would break my camera)

bunch of fucking hipsters if i’ve ever seen em.

Bring me a philly blunt and i will bring you the ring. Early 70’s Scandinavian pre-electro inspired by the works of one J.R.R Tolkien.

And last but not least, the pièce de résistance, a record i scoured for after crazy Canadian record collector dude gestured to about 20 crates which might have had something by the artist I was looking for. Jayson Hoover, a soul singer who rose to fame in Vancouver during the mid-60’s with his group, The Epics, happens to be a certain somebody’s uncle, who also prides himself on his Eastvan lifestyle. The album I was lucky enough to find happens to be the man’s self-titled debut (and last?) solo album, released in the mid-70’s and recorded in Vancouver’s recently defunct Mushroom Studios, where music legends such as the skinny boy herself, Diana Ross and The Supremes, and Led Fucking Zeppelin have also laid down tracks in the past. The album is really funky and rock-y and soulful, and he shouts out Van on a couple hooks, which is dope, particularly for the few rapping family members that get to sample it. This was one of the most valuable purchases i’ve ever made, and being a Vancouver diehard myself, giving it away was bittersweet. But i guess the guy deserves to own it. Jayson Hoover, thank you for contributing to Vancouver’s rich and overlooked history with your music. I hope you like your gift!
